Operation Payback Community Service Project

Dec 12th, 2008

Working with 6th District Police Capt. Gaglione, Alderman Donovan, Probation and Parole, Sharon Blando of DNS Graffiti and local Safe Places, Safe & Sound Community Partners played an integral role in the removal of hundreds of instances of graffiti on homes and businesses during neighborhood improvement efforts. This project called ‘Operation Pay Back’ was highlighted in the news and continued throughout the summer and into the fall. The young men involved were members of the ‘WR’ graffiti crew that were arrested and sentenced to community service to avoid a felony record. These offenders have gotten to know Community Partner Aaron Edwards, law enforcement and other community residents in this process and gained a greater appreciation for the harm they have caused. Aaron has encouraged them to take advantage of opportunities to get their GED through Journey House Safe Place. TRUE Skool presented to the group and is working with several of the offenders to train them in positive and legal outlets for their painting. The program has been so positive and successful that other offenders have contacted Aaron to join in and help keep the South side graffiti free and devoid of garbage.
