Safe & Sound staff and block captain recognized in Mayor’s Address

The Mayor emphasized that when he took office, he made public safety a top priority. Specifically, he noted the cooperation among police officers, the clergy, community agencies and individuals which has led to “some very gratifying results.” One of the most significant results is the 65% drop in homicides among young African American men in 2008, from 54 in 2007 to 19 in 2008. The Mayor also emphasized that violent crime is down in all categories.

Another success story is told by Elder Ruben Madison Jr., one of the active residents on 21st & Burleigh that Safe & Sound has worked hard to develop. Mayor Tom Barrett recognized him as well as Talibah Mateen-Hooper and Al Hegwood of the Safe & Sound Community Partner’s Program  in his State of the City Address. Elder Madison is the block captain of the 3100 block of N. 21st St. Efforts are underway to spread the effort and “adopt” adjacent blocks. This successful resident group is the result of effective collaborations and strong resident relationships. Others recognized by the Mayor included Jake Corr of the District Attorney’s Office, Ray Robakowski of the Milwaukee Police Department, and Ron Roberts and Matt Dama of the Department of Neighborhood Services. You can read the entire speech on the City of Milwaukee website.
