Another instance of Safe & Sound facilitating collaborative efforts is exemplified by the Basura Bash, or “Trash Bash.”  Safe & Sound Community Partners and Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful brought diverse groups to the table to plan and execute the first Basura Bash in 2008, which was a great success.

Last year’s event included more than 30 Southside groups, including block clubs, law enforcement, Safe & Sound Safe Places and businesses, as well as community- and faith-based organizations. Two hundred forty-one volunteers removed the signs of crime and grime from the Southside of Milwaukee, including graffiti and garbage, while at the same time implementing environmental safety strategies, such as alley identification projects.

Afterwards, more than 300 participants gathered at Walker Square Park for resource information, free food, games and entertainment.  Safe Place youth groups came to help out at more than 15 clean-up sites across the Southside.

The 2009 Basura Bash is scheduled for Saturday, May 30th from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and  will start from Walker Square Park, 1031 S. 9th St. (across the street from the United Community Center).

Help out at one of 15 Southside sites for community improvement projects and then then gather at Noon for a fiesta, including free food (nachos!), entertainment, Zoo passes and more!
