Safe Places Help Build Float for All City Parade

Aug 6th, 2009

The All City Parade is a project that involves collaborations between dozens of organizations and a diverse assortment of community volunteers. It is an idea inspired by a parade event held in Minneapolis by an organization called In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre.

The parade expresses the views of Milwaukee residents brought out through a series of community input and planning circles. In the end, it is a creative critique of society and government. The floats, masks and characters have been assembled by a team of artists with the help of volunteers at a spacious warehouse on Clybourn. Numerous youth from Safe Places helped in this process of paper maché, wire and wood frames, priming and painting, over a period of several weeks.

The All City parade has been rescheduled after being rained out on August 8th. It will now coincide with the Labor Day Parade on September 7. People interested in volunteering can call 414-347-1685.
