All-City Parade “wows” and inspires

Sep 8th, 2009

The annual Labor Day parade in downtown Milwaukee got a little jolt of creativity this year when the All-City People’s Parade hit Wisconsin Avenue. The original parade date was rained out, but the weather was fine on Monday.

For weeks running up to the event artists and volunteers from all across the city worked hard on designing and building the elements of the parade. Youth from several Safe Places helped out as well as Safe & Sound VISTA and staff to make the day a reality.

The crowds lining the streets couldn’t believe their eyes when some of the giant puppets and masked people passed by. Each element of the parade had a message that fit into a larger theme. The themes of the parade were strung along together to present the ideas and inspiration of the Milwaukee community that adopted the concept from Minneapolis and reconstructed it right here in our city.

The ideas and inspiration began with two questions, “What are you most afraid of?” and “What is your greatest hope?” From these simple questions arose a flurry of ideas, concepts and costumes, masks and messages. See for yourself. Take a look at all the great photos from Labor Day 2009.
