Days of Caring Brings Volunteer Resources to Safe & Sound and Milwaukee Neighborhoods

Sep 18th, 2009

Every year Days of Caring brings more than 2,000 committed volunteers together to make a difference at nonprofit agencies throughout the Greater Milwaukee area. Volunteers select one local non-profit at which they can apply their skills and passion. Over 75 non-profits participated in 2008 with volunteers from 40 local businesses. Together they completed 9,500 hours of community service.

Safe & Sound was active with Days of Caring for the first time this year, receiving motivated volunteers from Foley & Lardner and Manpower. They worked together with Safe & Sound staff, including Development Director Chris Tischer and Community Partners Aaron Edwards and Maria Sandoval, on an effort called “Operation Payback.”  Aaron did a great job educating the volunteers about Operation Payback and what it really means to the community and the offenders. Maria worked closely interacting with volunteers and explaining how the project has grown.

The group also included Probation and Parole Agents, Officer Jose Arzaga, and Assistant District Attorney Kelly Hedge.  At one point Captain Gaglione of the Milwaukee Police Department 2nd District was able to stop by and thank the volunteers.

Everyone worked together to remove graffiti from city dumpsters, light poles, garages and businesses. Manpower volunteers had a rainy day,  but just as importantly, they were all given the opportunity to get to know eachother and gain new perspectives while  improving lives within our community.
