Safe & Sound is pleased to announce that 27 Milwaukee community organizations have been selected as 2010 Safe Place grantees. Safe Places offer after-school activities that give youth ages 10 – 19 an opportunity to explore new interests, meet new friends, and have fun, while educating them on the consequences of crime both individually and collectively. There are two models of Safe Places: S.A.F.E. programs (sequential, active, focused and explicit) and Youth Together Drop-In Centers (YTDIC).

S.A.F.E. grants are awarded to programs that intervene in the lives of youth who are considered to be at a higher risk of becoming victims of crime, or engaging in risk-taking behavior, substance abuse, gangs or truancy. As a unique approach to helping Safe & Sound achieve its mission in the community, S.A.F.E sites produce youth-led initiatives – - known as a Crime Strategy Initiative (CSI). Within this program, youth have opportunities to work closely with law enforcement and community partners to learn about a crime issue in detail and create a service project — to help address it.

Youth Together Drop-In Centers (YTDIC) offer a wide range of youth development and social enrichment programs to ensure that at-risk youth are provided a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment during peak hours when young people are the most vulnerable to becoming crime victims. Most drop-in centers also provide programming that is focused on helping youth make better choices to keep them safe.

Safe Places help youth achieve personal and social skills through interactive forms of learning. All, but one site is open year-round; while the one center is open during summertime only. Tens of thousands of youth visit Safe Places each year. Three new Safe Places will come online in 2010; 24 sites are continuing centers.

Safe & Sound would like to acknowledge the following 27 Safe Place sites:
