Teen Access to Alcohol Public Education Presentations Rolled Out

Jan 8th, 2010

The Reality Check Initiative is designed to reduce 13 – 20 year olds’ access to alcohol by changing community perceptions, norms and enforcement in three targeted neighborhoods. Safe & Sound Community Partners has taken a lead role in collecting information on community perceptions and educating residents and business owners. With Adrian Thomas of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee leading the coalition, Safe & Sound plays a key supporting role along with other coalition members, including the Milwaukee Police Department, District Attorney’s Office, alcohol retailers and manufacturers, faith based and community based organizations, as well as youth and resident groups.

As part of our supporting role Safe & Sound organizers have been developing informative presentations on topics related to the Reality Check objectives. On Thursday, January 7, David Crowley and Jessica Watson of Safe & Sound gave one such presentation at the Milwaukee Police Department District 5 Crime Analysis Meeting. They introduced the Reality check initiative to over 35 residents and police officers. The information was well received and many of the residents expressed concerns surrounding alcohol sales and the sale of cigarettes to underage youth. In fact, several of the residents have followed up with their interest in the coalition since the meeting.

Reality Check is a great opportunity for residents, store owners, and the Milwaukee community to take responsibility and take action for underage access to alcohol and other harmful substances. If you are interested in becoming a coalition member you can contact Jessica Watson of Safe & Sound or Adrian Thomas of the Boys & Girls Club at 414-383-2650.
