“I Have A Dream” Youth Help Organize MLK Day Event

Jan 18th, 2010

Students from Clarke Street School, Public Allies and residents at Dr. Wesley Scott Senior Apartments, 2800 West Wright Street, conducted an intergenerational event for Martin Luther King Day. The staff of Clarke Street School included Ms. Hayes and Charles Reese of the “I Have a Dream” program. Several of the student participants were from the “I have A Dream Program” at Clarke Street School. Public Allies and Talibah Mateen of Safe & Sound worked with youth and residents to organize the day. The art materials were given to the school “Dreamer Program” through a donation with which each participant was able to create a peace bracelet and key ring. The really impressive project was the peace blankets; two were made so one could stay at the senior center while the other is displayed in the hallway at the School.

At the end of the program the group enjoyed a pot-luck lunch together. Ms. Kendra, Property Representative of the Dr. Wesley Scott Senior Apartments, prepared the buildings facilities for the lunch. In total there were over 50 Public Allies, seniors and youth involved in the effort. It was a fitting way to celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King’s legacy.
