Restorative Justice Trainings for Youth Scheduled

Jan 21st, 2010

Two restorative justice trainings for youth will be held in the coming months. Joel Brenord, Safe & Sound Restorative Justice Coordinator and VISTA member, is organizing the effort in conjunction with the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Community Conferencing Program. The first training will be held on Tuesday, February 9th at Project Excel, a Safe & Sound Safe Place for youth. The second will be held on March 9th at the Social Development Commission’s Youth Development Program offices at 4041 N. Richards, a new funded Safe Place in 2010. Both trainings are in preparation for participation in actual juvenile offender conferences also being scheduled for February and March. Additional restorative justice trainings for adults wishing to become facilitators of conferences or peace making circles are also planned and being developed for later in the year.

Community Conferencing is a restorative justice based program for nonviolent offenders aimed at repairing the harm inflicted by crime, restoring a sense of community and providing an alternative to incarceration. This training for Safe Place youth will allow participation in actual criminal cases that involve offenders, victims, other youth and community members. It is an invaluable skill to learn and can greatly benefit the surrounding community as well as personal growth and understanding of the impacts of crime.

Questions? Contact Erin Katzfey with the DA’s Community Conferencing Program at 278-4632. Space is limited. To RSVP call Diana Rodriguez at (414) 221-6700 by 4:00, Friday, March 5th.
