Community Organizers Conference: Mobilizing Resources for Safer Neighborhoods

Safe & Sound is in the final preparations for a Community Organizers Conference on April 9th, 2010. The conference is a collaborative effort with Safe & Sound, Milwaukee HIDTA, Marquette University Center for Community Transformation, and the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Department. It is a one day event held at the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Academy on April 9th from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. We expect over 100 participants to be involved and feature an introduction by local Milwaukee leaders. The afternoon will offer three one-hour long presentations, as well as seven community resource tables. The audience will be composed of community builders and neighborhood leaders who work to improve the safety and security, as well as the physical and social environment of Milwaukee block-by-block.

The theme of the conference is “mobilizing resources for safer neighborhoods.” The services and resources many organizations, government entities and individuals provide are a truly valuable asset to community organizers and neighborhood leaders in their collaborative efforts to improve Milwaukee. The focus of the conference is to create a dialog among community mobilizers which fosters collaborative relationships that leverage these assets. Moreover, we hope attendees will learn about new resources and begin to see their existing neighborhood attributes in a new light.

To accomplish these ends the Marquette Center for Community Transformation will provide a morning presentation that will recharge all participants for the work of community building. A goal of learning to truly engage local resources for the work of community organizing will be achieved by describing the functions of the brain and their causes, while expanding on our definition of intelligence. Perhaps most importantly, the conference will build and refine the ability to tell our stories and make decisions about what to do. . . do more, do less, start and stop . . as a community.
