Resource Fair Provides Valuable Community Information to United North Residents

The Spring Information & Resource Fair at Incarnation Lutheran Church on 15th and Keefe was held on Saturday, March 27th. Law enforcement, faith based and community based organizations, businesses came together to organize the event. The fair provided information on crime prevention, Community Learning Centers, summer school, summer camps, recreational activities, and more to over 126 participants.
Collaborators included Incarnation Church, the Milwaukee Police Department, Safe & Sound, Riverworks Development Corporation, Milwaukee Public Schools Summer School and Recreation Departments, Running Rebels, Urban de Version Social Support Network, Career Youth Development, Bee-Liever’s BeeYond the Stars, Bee-Liever’s Neighborhood House, and Universal America Today’s Health.
Al Hegwood and Talibah Mateen, both Safe & Sound Community Partners’ organizers, were part of the planning process and on hand the day of the event to help attendees obtain the information and assistance they needed. In addition, over 20 hours of volunteer service were conducted by local helpers.
The second annual spring information fair offered employment opportunities and Milwaukee Public School summer activities. Volunteers from local organizations offered a wide array of opportunities for youth. Such opportunities included learning the skills for operating a recording studio from Running Rebels or conducting mock interviews by Urban de Version’s Social Support Network were offered for youth. Teens from a variety of schools were in attendance, including Alliance High School, South Division, Marshall, Work Institute, Banner Day School, Mill’s Christian Academy and others. A student from Alliance emphasized that “he was trying to do something different,” and the job resources really inspired him. Another young woman from Mill’s Christian Academy appreciated “the people with helping hands and respectful thoughts” that she met at the event. Shamente stated that the event helped her see that “I can be helped and someone wants to help me.”
Overall, it was a great day and well attended by the local community.
