Basura Bash is Back for 2010

Apr 24th, 2010

Safe & Sound Community Partners and Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful brought diverse groups to the table to plan and coordinate the first Basura Bash in 2008, which was a great success. The event is now in it’s third year and will be bigger and better than ever. The youth at Hope House are excited about the event and planting their garden so they made a video to show everyone.

Previous years events included numerous Southside groups, including block clubs, law enforcement, Safe & Sound Safe Places and businesses, as well as community- and faith-based organizations. Hundreds of volunteers removed the signs of crime and grime from the Southside of Milwaukee, including graffiti and garbage, while at the same time implementing environmental beutification and safety strategies, such as alley identification and flower planting projects. Participants were welcomed to a major fiesta with food, resource tables, entertainment and games.

The 2010 Basura Bash is scheduled for Saturday, May 22nd from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and will start from Kosciuszko Park, 2101 S. 7th St., on the corner of 7th and Lincoln.  Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful is integral to the planning and coordination. The Department of Neighborhood Services has also made a big commitment to the event this year. They value and appreciate the strong support of resident groups in community wide improvement efforts. Residents from all walks are encouraged to join in at 10 AM and help out at more than 15 Southside sites for community improvement projects. At noon, a big Basura Bash fiesta is planned, including free food (nachos!), entertainment, Zoo passes and more!

Volunteers are needed to make the day a success. Volunteers can contact and contact Maria Sandoval of Safe & Sound at (414) 221-6709 for more information, or just come to Kozy Park at 10:00 AM on the day of the event. Check out the fun pictures from last year!
