Community Action Days Kick-Off at COA
May 24th, 2010
The Milwaukee Police Department’s Community Action Days are just that; a day to get officers and residents in action, working together to make a visible and positive change in our neighborhoods. Each of the action days culminate in a resource fair, food and an impressive police district roll call in the street.
The first one was a big success last year at COA, a funded Safe & Sound Safe Place, on 23rd & Burleigh. MPD collaborated with COA, Safe & Sound and other community groups to launch the 2010 Community Action Days at the same location. Over 200 residents and 40 police officers helped clean-up the surrounding neighborhood and demonstrate a visible solidarity.
Community Action Days are the final step in a process of door-to-door outreach to discuss crime concerns with residents and identify specific nuisance properties. This is followed by a comprehensive Community Prosecution Unit team effort to resolve criminal nuisance issues deemed most important by residents. Residents who may at times feel underserved by law enforcement become more positive about their block when they see their concerns addressed. As a result, the level of toleration for nuisance activity, including drug dealing, gang loitering and gun violence, goes down.
