2010 National Night Out Events Reach Across the City

Aug 4th, 2010

National Night Out 2010 is one more step forward for community policing efforts in Milwaukee. Just a couple of years back National Night Out took place in just a few neighborhoods in just a few police districts. Now, it is city-wide and multiple events are planned and carried out with fervor every August. Kozy park, Copps Park, Clarke Square, District 3, St. James Church, 4th District; these are all great community events that bring anti-crime efforts to the streets of Milwaukee. Moreover, it is real resources and a good time had by all.

National Night Out is a great opportunity for residents to network with one another and share their challenges and successes. At one event on the Southside, Fernando explained how he had really serious gang issues on his block with shooting and drug dealing literally taking over their street. Through Maria Sandoval of Safe & Sound he met Community Liaison Officer Jesus Gloria. With the support of Maria and Gloria he took a stand against the gang members. Initially he faced resistance and other residents were fearful to help out, but eventually the gang members got the message and a block club was formed. Fernando couldn’t say enough about the assistance and encouragement he received and how he would not have been successful without it.

National Night Out is also an opportunity for youth to interact with law enforcement in a positive setting, and vice versa. Open dialog is necessary to build good communication and deeper understanding and a community event with everyone working together is the perfect forum. One young girl learned about all of the technology in a Sheriff’s squad car, including the new license plate scanner. After spending a few minutes with the Deputy she commented how nice and patient he was. She forgot that he was even a Deputy when he started talking about his kids and how they are interested in the same things; so simple and small but important.

More and more frequently youth, adults and law enforcement are meeting on common ground and finding ways to work together to reduce crime in Milwaukee. Safe & Sound is one among several agencies that strive to bring diverse groups together and find creative solutions that ultimately lead to safer communities. Join on in, be a part of it.
