City On a Hill Gets in On the Parade
Aug 17th, 2010
The All-City People’s Parade, launched last year, is set to make a return to the streets of downtown Milwaukee. This week, youth from City on a Hill stopped by to assist parade artists prepare for the event.
Ron Fry, one of the many talented artists working on creating magical puppets, floats and masks for the parade, instructs the young people from City on a Hill as they join him at a free Make-A-Parade workshop. The workshops were held throughout the summer and allowed the community to take part in building parade props.
As before, the All City People’s Parade will be held on Labor Day, Sept. 6. The parade takes place during LaborFest, an annual celebration for workers. The parade kicks off at 11:00 am at Zeidler Park and continues down Wisconsin Ave., ending up at the Summerfest grounds. Parade organizers are urging the community to come out again this year for the parade. All of the parade exhibits are people-powered.
Sponsoring the parade is the highly respected Milwaukee Public Theatre, in collaboration with Milwaukee Mask and Puppet Theatre.
This was the first time youth from City on a Hill had participated in a parade workshop. City on a Hill is one of Safe & Sound’s newest Safe Places, located in the Avenues West neighborhood. Ron praised the youth for their work, and is excited that they are interested in being in the parade. Supervising the youth at the parade space was Javaris Stevenson, Youth Development Intern at City on a Hill.
Perhaps, you’re interested in being a part of the parade. Everyone is welcome. After all, it’s the People’s Parade.
