Linking Community Resources for “At-Risk” Youth
On March 23rd and 24th the Marquette University campus will host forums, conversation and networking for professionals and dedicated individuals working with youth involved in gangs or those young people at-risk. On Wednesday, Greg Boyle, SJ, founder of Homeboy Industries, will present and share his story and experiences working with Los Angeles gang members. On Thursday, a Milwaukee panel will provide a local perspective. In addition, small group discussion will be facilitated to allow attendees an opportunity to come together to react and discuss the two day experience.
Safe & Sound is playing a role in helping to connect the dots during and after the forum and allowing the opportunity for participants to gain a better understanding of the issues surrounding gangs and the Milwaukee neighborhoods impacted. Operation Payback and other community events take it out into the streets and alleys to see the effects of gang crime and speak with community members most impacted. It is also a chance to work side-by-side with community members, offenders, police, probation agents, prosecutors, and community organizers while removing graffiti and addressing other blight issues. All in all, it is great experience for anyone looking to gain a better understanding of the challenges faced in Milwaukee neighborhoods while lending a hand and a little support.
