Community in Action Strategies: Brush Removal for Increased Visibility, Blight and Safety
Safe & Sound utilizes a variety of strategies that involve residents, youth and volunteers in cleaning up blighted areas and improving community safety. Many of these strategies are based on CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) principles and work towards making neighborhoods safer and bringing residents together to develop relationships and a sense of community. The goal of Community in Action strategies is to develop projects that can be run simultaneously which are scalable depending on the number of volunteers, community need and material resources available.
Alley Line Brush Removal
Overgrown brush is a serious problem in many alleys across the city. Weeds can also become a nuisance mid summer and need to be removed as well. The least that will happen is an unsightly pileup of debris in hanging branches and along the ground. However, overgrown brush can provide a hiding spot for guns, drugs, or even someone who is trying to rob people. Brush that is on vacant lots and hangs into the alley can be removed with basic clippers and saws by a volunteer group that is excited to take on the challenge. The tools are available through Safe & Sound but it is recommended that you bring your own tools if available.
