Community Action Projects Coming to Four Milwaukee Neighborhoods

Community Action Projects (CAP) are a series of community improvement projects which will be held in the months of July and August. Hundreds of volunteers from faith based organizations will join with neighborhood residents to demonstrate “community in action.” The service projects are being sponsored by Rock the Lakes Milwaukee and are intended to have a positive, visible impact on the City in advance of the Rock the Lakes events to be held at Veteran’s Park on August 20th and 21st.

Safe & Sound is helping to coordinate the community improvement initiatives with local block clubs, neighborhood associations and Safe & Sound Safe Places. These projects will benefit residents and neighborhoods in Milwaukee by decreasing blight and increasing safety. Efforts will include graffiti removal, alley identification numbering, garbage clean-up, sewer grate stenciling, and the construction of community gardens. As part of this effort, the CAP Committee solicited proposals from Neighborhood Associations and established community groups for small neighborhood improvement projects to supplement the efforts listed above. The projects will be led by the associations or group and will be implemented the day of the event. The projects will utilize volunteers from local churches to be considered.

A number of groups are lending significant support for the Community Action Projects, including City on a Hill, the Holton Youth + Family Center, KGMB, Northwest Side Community Development Corporation, Milwaukee County Parks Kosciuszko Center. In addition, community associations and organizations will be implementing funded community building volunteer initiatives on the dates specified below. These include: Riverwest Neighborhood Association, Wright Street Resource Center, Milwaukee Time Exchange, Holton Youth + Family Center, 2nd Street Block Club, Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful, Midtown Block Club, the Milwaukee Christian Center, Northwest Side CDC, and Century City Neighborhood Association and more.
