Safe & Sound Teams up with Safe Places on Safe Night/YCAM Event
WHAT: Safe Night/YCAM Event
WHY: Safe Nights have provided youth with a refuge from the violence and drugs found on the streets and in other venues that organized to entertain young people for nearly 20 years. This national strategy aimed at preventing violence and drug use began in 1993 here in Milwaukee. Event organizers decided to couple the Safe Night with a second concept – the Youth Crime Analysis Meeting – begun in 2008 and organized by the United Community Center. Crime analysis meetings are held monthly at Milwaukee police districts across the city and are usually attended by a hand full of the public. But, when youth leaders of a Safe & Sound Crime Strategy Initiative decided to organize an evening YCAM, nearly 200 turned out to hear Mayor Barrett, the police captain in District 2, other elected official and community leaders analyze the crime problems plaguing the community surrounding UCC.
This event, organized with youth and staff of the Safe Places, will feature the STOP program developed by Officer William Singleton of the 5th District, a crime analysis presentation by CLO Jesus Gloria of the 2nd District, and showcase talented youth performers displaying their vocal and musical prowess. DJ wiz Pakk Mann, a sought after spoken word performer from Running Rebels, will also be on hand to entertain the audience. Expected attendance is 75 at each site.
