Holton Youth + Family Center Safe Place is a Growing Neighborhood Asset
The Holton Youth + Family Center, one of Safe & Sound’s 28 Safe Places in 2011, is regaining its status as a neighborhood institution and getting into gear for the fall school season. The planning process has been moved along by the Medical College of Wisconsin Violence Prevention Initiative for which the HYFC is a funded research parter.
On the weekend of August 27th the center was the scene of a major neighborhood back-to-school event. It was a wonderful success with broad neighborhood participation from across Riverwest and Harambee. Children and families enjoyed themselves with food and games while learning about the services and programs available at the center. Of course, everyone went home with school supplies to get the new year started off on the right foot. Thanks to Winnie Butler for all of the beautiful photos!
The Holton Youth + Family Center has also been gaining attention on other fronts. Lisa Goldman interviewed youth and staff from the Holton for 88.9 Radio Milwaukee Neighborhood Project. Clarence Johnson, Katie Polace, Linda Wade, Torre Johnson, Victor Barnett, and Johnel Grimes all gave their thoughts and reflections on their experience to date bringing back this neighborhood institution. As one of Safe & Sound’s 28 Safe Places, these dedicated individuals and many more work to provide quality after-school activities among other programming focused on youth and family development.
