ONDCP Deputy Director Visits Safe & Sound

David Mineta of the Office of National Drug Control Policy visited Milwaukee and Safe & Sound to learn more about the award winning programs and practices. Director Mineta attended the Safe & Sound board meeting and presented a plaque which commemorates the “Champions of Change” award. Barbara Notestein, Executive Director, received the award along with board members Mayor Tom Barrett and District Attorney Chisholm.

David Mineta was confirmed by the Senate in the position of Deputy Director of Demand Reduction for the Office of National Drug Control Policy in July of 2010. Prior to his appointment, Mineta was the Deputy Director of Asian American Recovery Services, a large non-profit organization specifically focused on addressing mental health issues in the Asian American community. In his position, overseeing the Office of Demand Reduction, Mineta helps to develop and promote federal programs to reduce drug abuse and addiction, as well as to improve addiction treatment. He generously offered his many years of experience, national perspective and thoughtful insight throughout the visit.

Director Mineta spent time at COA-Riverwest, one of our funded Safe Places. He viewed a Crime Strategy Initiative art project and participated in a discussion around drug use and decision making with local youth from COA. He also visited with the District 5 Community Prosecution Unit to learn how Milwaukee is tackling criminal nuisance properties. Mineta even got an opportunity to talk with local residents while going door-to-door with Community Partner Organizer Talibah Mateen and working to reduce graffiti and blight with Operation Payback.

In doing so, Mineta was also able to hear the ideas and concerns of youth, residents, young offenders, Probation and Parole, youth workers, Police Officers, and Safe & Sound staff working in the field every day. It was a pleasure to have such a respected guest take valuable time to become more acquainted with the work of Safe & Sound and the issues surrounding illegal drug use in Milwaukee.
