Coalition Kick-Off Meeting Held at Neighborhood House

The 2012 Coalition Kick-Off Meeting was held on Wednesday, February 8th with over 25 people representing individuals and organizations and a packed agenda. The new Coalition Manager, Claire Woodall, was introduced to the group. Also present was Jennifer Prill, Carroll University student and intern at Safe & Sound, who is focused this semester on building the Coalition. Claire and Jennifer made all of the necessary preparations, including contacting coalition members and promotions, researching and compiling meeting information, and developing the agenda.

The meeting provided an opportunity for Coalition members to hear updates as well as a presentation by Community Liaison Officer Brown from Milwaukee Police District 3. Officer Brown shared information about convenience stores in the 53208 zip code and the associated crime statistics. Regular store checks are conducted and more recently outreach to store owners to gather feedback. The presentation was built on District 3 Community Prosecution Unit analysis of police reports for the 22 convenience locations. Dates checked went back September 30th, 2009 and found the following results:

  • Total: 1074 CAD (dispatch reports), 257 RMS (incident reports)
  • Average = 48.8 CADS, 11.7 RMS
  • Maximum = 200 CADS, 26 RMS
  • Minimum = 2 CADS, 0 RMS
  • Median = 40.5 CADS, 11 RMS
  • Standard Deviation = 49.4 CADS, 8.5 RMS

The standard deviation shows quantitatively that there are very large differences between the amount of service a given licensed retailer receives from MPD. Additional analysis on just 10 of the businesses indicated: 25 instances of public drinking, 38 arrests, 9 of those arrests were drug incident related, and only 1 was an arrest of a juvenile. After the presentation a discussion about the neighborhood dynamics of corner stores and licensing followed which generated numerous questions and ideas.

Among other topics presented was SAMHSA sponsored Town Hall Meetings. The 27th Street West Drug Free Coalition has been offered an opportunity to hold town hall meetings. This year, hundreds of organizations across the Nation will be hosting Town Hall Meetings to mobilize communities around underage drinking prevention. Town Hall Meetings have been an important part of many successful community efforts and it is an exciting opportunity for the 27th Street West Drug Free Coalition.

The last portion of the meeting sought input for the Committee meeting schedule and the upcoming CADCA trainings. Ideas were also shared about ways to make the Coalitions meetings fun and educational for members as well as the community. Many of the members who attended the meeting were very enthusiastic about the idea of going on a neighborhood walk as a group for a Coalition meeting.

More input was requested via an online survey on the topics discussed at the meeting. If you have any additional questions or input you can contact Coalition Manager Claire Woodall.
